Maryvale Tech Trip

We had a great trip to Maryvale today to look at their iPad program. Thanks for organizing Kathy! Below are some notes I took that I wanted to share. Please add any observations I missed.

• First year entire trade book collection for English department on iPad which represented a savings

• Girls are reading more, yet the older students still crave reading in print

• Big push from parents to alleviate the physical weight and cost of textbooks. But with the iPad only being a 16 gig device some of the textbooks are just too large

• iPads owned by Maryvale but students put their own content on it, the idea is to use them not put limitations on use

• Many discussions related to the AUP in advance of the iPad roll-out

• Lisa shared her observation that she never would have guessed how poorly made the product is. She is typically at the Apple store once a week with a problem/defective device! Griffin Cases are very important.

• Biggest concern from parents who were surveyed on their daughters use of the iPad: MS parents have expressed concerns about the exposure to social networking ~ too much and too soon

• Not seeing the teachers use as many apps as they thought - MS teachers using apps more

• There is no printing from the iPads plus there is very limited printing on campus
